Ape Caves

Last weekend we took a road trip to Cougar, WA (near Woodland), camped overnight and then hiked through the Ape caves.
According to the US Forest Service website, "Ape Cave was named by the Scout Troop (who were the first to explore the caves in 1950), in honor of their sponsor, the St. Helens Apes. This local group was made up primarily of foresters. The sponsor’s name, St. Helens Apes, may have come from an old term used for foresters in the area, “brush apes,” or from the legend of Bigfoot. Well, we didn't see Bigfoot, but we saw a very grumpy little girl who was less than thrilled to give up her nap to tromp through a mile long, dark ,42 degree, old lava tube! The rest of us had a great time. Thomas and Zac loved shinning their flash lights on the rocks to look for monsters. Not finding any, they resorted to making their own monster sounds. Needless to say, we didn't sneak up on anyone, human or monster.
